The statement
I have just completed a new flower piece, continuing the asymmetrical, dynamically turning arrangement I learned from my teacher Willem van Aelst and which has remained my signature throughout the decades. As in my earlier compositions, the blooms spiral outward from a tight core, their brightest petals thrust forward against a near-black ground that makes each colour sing. I have rendered every species with the exactness my upbringing demands—my father's celebrated cabinet of dried plants and preserved specimens trained my eye to botanical truth from childhood, and I will not betray that discipline. Yet fidelity alone does not make a picture live: I have woven these dozens of identifiable flowers, insects, and perhaps a small reptile into one breathing whole, a rhythm of turning heads and drooping stems, of bloom and encroaching decay staged together as a small drama of life and time. The translucency of the petals, achieved through patient glazing, and the crisp accents—a curling leaf-edge, a bead of dew catching the light—reward the close, patient looking for which these pictures are built. I want the viewer to linger, to discover, to feel the vitality of cut flowers made to seem they still open and turn on the canvas.
