The statement

We have laboured to bring forth a page that fulfils the same charge the Duc de Berry set before us: "an object of supreme courtly splendour and minute finish." Every element has been rendered with what we might call a goldsmith's precision, for we understand our task to be the polishing of beauty "toward greater precision and elegance." The burnished gold and glowing ultramarine we have applied are not mere decoration—they give the miniature an inner radiance, a luminosity inseparable from the work itself.

Our intent has always been to press the International Gothic line toward something more tender and observed. Here, as in our calendar pages, we have married courtly refinement to "astonishingly particular" observation of the world. We have worked with "careful, persistent effort applied consistently over time," because this minute, jewel-like finish under a magnifying eye is what we believe defines our art. The viewer should feel both the splendour that overwhelms the senses and the intimate truthfulness of a world seen closely, with diligence and love.
