Modern los angeles downtown, after The Limbourg Brothers

The statement

# Artist's Statement

We have turned our hand to modern Los Angeles downtown with the same intention that guided our work for Jean, Duc de Berry: to create "an object of supreme courtly splendour and minute finish," now pressed into service for a patron of our own imagining. As we conceived the calendar pages of the *Très Riches Heures* to fulfill the charge of luxury while reaching toward "a new, tender naturalism of season, labour, and place," so too does this new work marry that same courtly refinement with patient observation of a distant city's particular light and architecture.

We have rendered the glass towers and wide boulevards with the precision we once reserved for the Louvre's turrets and the Seine's reflections—"a rare early attempt at rendered water"—now applied to steel and shadow. The palette retains our beloved ultramarine and gold, for "mineral colour and abundant gold make the pages a display of luxury," but here the gold catches not on fire-screens and plate, but on sunset-struck windows. The composition tilts upward as our ploughed fields once did, "drawing the eye" along the vertical thrust of skyscrapers. We have observed this modern place with the same diligence we brought to "peasants, weather, and castle-brick," seeking its specific, low, golden light.
