The statement

We have laboured to bring the observant eye of our calendar pages to this scene of present-day toil. As we did for the duke's Très Riches Heures, rendering the February peasants warming themselves by the hearth or the October ploughman turning his furrows beneath the Louvre's towers, we now fix our gaze upon this man and his machine beneath the post oak. Our charge remains what it was: to press "International Gothic elegance toward a new, tender naturalism of season, labour, and place."

The composition is tilted upward, as in our October field, so that the mower, the tree's gnarled bark, and the flag above occupy a shallow, tapestried space. We have rendered the aluminum can and the green enamel of the machine with "goldsmith's precision," as though they were the gold plate and hounds of our January feast. The ultramarine sky, the burnished chrome, the Texas colours—all glow with mineral luminosity. Every bolt, every leaf, every shadow is observed with the diligence we once brought to beehives and footprints in snow. The viewer should feel what our duke felt: the splendour of patient craft married to the unfeigned dignity of work.
