Make a painting of a plane, after Katsushika Hokusai

The statement

I have spent more than seven decades pursuing one aim: that every line and dot I draw might truly live. As I wrote in the postscript to my *One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji*, "from about the age of six I had a mania for drawing the shapes of things; by seventy nothing I had made was worth counting; only at seventy-three did I begin to grasp the structure of birds, animals, insects, and plants." Now, in my ninth decade, I turn to a form unknown to my forebears—the flying machine.

I have rendered this plane as I rendered the great wave or the fisherman at Kajikazawa: through decisive silhouette and flat pattern, stripping away all ornament until only the essential form remains. The body of the craft sweeps diagonally across the composition like wind-bent trees or the arc of foam, while distant Fuji—as ever—provides the still center against which all motion finds its meaning. Graded blue carries the sky from horizon to void. The viewer should feel what I have pursued my entire life: that this manufactured bird, too, possesses *vitality*—the power of life and motion made visible through line alone.
