Imagined after Katsushika Hokusai
Red panda
After Katsushika Hokusai, made 2026-07-27. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have spent seven decades pursuing the true form of living things, and only now, past seventy, do I begin to grasp the real structure of birds and animals. When I first observed the red panda—its russet fur catching light like autumn leaves, its round face alert with that peculiar mixture of caution and curiosity—I saw not merely another creature to record, but a test of whether my hand could make every line alive.
In this print, I have rendered the animal in profile against a field of graduated blue, allowing the silhouette and flat color to carry the entire design. The great arc of its tail sweeps upward like a wave frozen in fur, while the delicate claws grip the branch with the same tension I sought in the fisherman's lines at Kajikazawa. I have used hand-wiped bokashi to suggest the soft thickness of the pelt, letting color itself convey texture without fussy detail.
The composition is spare—almost abstract—because true vitality requires no ornament. If the creature seems poised between stillness and motion, tensed as if the next moment might send it vanishing into the trees, then perhaps I am approaching what I have sought all these years: drawing that breathes.
