Red panda sailing a bot, after Katsushika Hokusai

The statement

I have labored seven decades at the drawing-block, and still I chase the line that lives. "From about the age of six I had a mania for drawing the shapes of things; by seventy nothing I had made was worth counting; only at seventy-three did I begin to grasp the structure of birds, animals, insects, and plants." Now, in my eightieth year, I turn to this red panda—a creature whose form I have studied until I know the curve of its haunches, the spring in its limbs—and set it upon a boat against wind and wave.

The composition follows my method: the great diagonal of the sail sweeps across the block as once my wave curved over Fuji, and I have rendered the water in patterns of claw and spray, each line decisive, each shape clear. The panda's posture is hunched against the breeze, alive with effort, as were my travelers at Ejiri. I work in silhouette and flat color—simplicity is mastery—so that every stroke carries weight. The boat tilts, the sail strains, the animal grips: all must move, all must breathe. If I reach one hundred, perhaps even this small vessel will truly sail.
