67, after Katsushika Hokusai

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have drawn for more than sixty years, yet I confess that before the age of seventy I made nothing worth counting. At seventy-three, I began at last to grasp something of the true structure of nature—of birds and animals, of insects and fish, of the grasses and the trees. Now, at eighty-seven, I take up this subject, sixty-seven, as one more step along the path.

The number itself becomes a landscape. I render it with the same decisive line I would give to the silhouette of Fuji against the sky, the same clarity I sought when the great wave curled over the boats or when wind stripped paper from travelers' hands. In my prints, I have learned that grand effects arise from simplicity—from silhouette, from flat color, from a single stroke that lives. Here, too, every dot and line must be alive.

By the time I reach one hundred and ten, perhaps even a number will breathe. For now, I set down sixty-seven with the practice of seven decades behind my hand, striving still toward that moment when drawing truly lives.
