Imagined after Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād
Red panda playing a sport of the time
After Kamāl ud-Dīn Behzād, made 2026-07-27. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have turned my brush to a creature never seen in our workshops — a red panda, as travelers describe it from the eastern forests — and set it at a game of polo, the sport that fills our courts with thunder and dust. The emperor Babur himself named me as one whose figures live and breathe upon the page, and so I have given this strange beast the same purposeful gesture I grant to workmen climbing scaffolding or beggars turning at a mosque door. Modern scholars credit me with "distributing figures asymmetrically across a believable, tilted space and giving each an individual posture and errand," so that even a scene of play gains the clarity of documentary truth within our jewel-color conventions.
The panda's body tilts forward as it swings the mallet, its bushy tail a curve of coral against the lapis field. I have scattered other players and their mounts across the page in a dozen distinct actions — one gallops, another reins his horse, a groom waits below — so the eye travels the ground as it would climb the half-built Palace of Khavarnaq. Gold leaf catches the light where ornament demands it, and every tile and textile receives the minute, disciplined finish a royal page requires.
