The statement

I have composed this page to show how a moment of human labor may be lifted into the realm of splendor without losing the vitality of the figures who enact it. My brush disperses the workmen across the tilted architecture so that each carries his own errand — one hoists a beam, another mixes mortar, a third steadies the scaffold — and the eye must travel from task to task as it would on a true building site. This is the innovation for which my name has become, I am told, a byword: breaking the older symmetrical tiers and giving each figure an individual posture within a believable, overlapping space.

Yet I remain a servant of the royal workshop, and the page must still be a jewel. The blue tile and coral brick climb the structure in patterns that lock the design together, and I have keyed the lapis and gold to a paradise-bright clarity. The calligraphic inscriptions weave into the walls as ornament and text at once. My intent is that the viewer should see both the particular life of each bent figure and the magnificent whole they compose — complexity refined into elegance, vitality held within splendor, the world made luminous on the page.
