The statement

I have completed a new work that revives the methods of the Tang and Northern Song masters, as I believe painting and calligraphy must be written with the same brush. In this, I follow the principle that "Zhao's animal and landscape pictures are written with the same wrist as his running script: contour as calligraphy, the handscroll and the album leaf as the scholar's true formats." The subject is not chosen for spectacle but for the intimacy of the scholar's table—a space where style itself becomes an argument about continuity with the past.

My brush constructs form through calligraphic contour and spare washes, allowing empty paper to do the work that lesser painters fill with detail. I am not surveying nature as the Song monumentalists did; I am remembering it, making the archaic present again. This is a learned art, forged for Khubilai's court but rooted in models that predate the current dynasty. Whether the viewer sees collaboration or integrity in this effort, the brush itself carries forward what must not be lost. The handscroll unrolls as a procession of remembered forms—types rewritten, not copied—so that the past remains usable in this new age.
