The statement

I have spent these last years at Prouts Neck learning what can be left out. The sea does not require sentiment, and I will not add it. This new canvas holds to that rule: a figure, water, weather—facts observed and set down without decoration.

After Cullercoats I brought the economy of watercolor into my oils—large planes of water, a hard horizon, a single figure whose gesture carries the entire drama. I learned this in pictures like *The Fog Warning*, where the dory is a dark wedge on a long swell and the man's twist tells you everything: the catch in the boat, home on the horizon, fog already closing. The design does not promise rescue; it records what is there.

The sea is opaque weight, not a mirror for our moods. I paint it as cobalt and cold green, the way it looks off this coast when the light is honest. The figure remains in the boat—that is fortitude, the body tested and holding. If the viewer feels anything, let it be the truth of that endurance, not consolation I did not paint.
