Create a calm portrait, after Worthington Whittredge

The statement

I have returned from a decade abroad determined to see and paint the American landscape on its own quiet terms, putting aside the habits I acquired in Düsseldorf. During those European years I posed as a model for Leutze's great historical compositions—an academic discipline in drawing and finish that now underlies the calm precision I seek in my own work. But when I came home, I felt almost bewildered before our native scenery and recognized that I had to learn anew, honestly, what was before me.

Crossing the Great Plains in 1866, I found myself more deeply impressed by the vast, level solitude and immense quiet light of the prairie than by any mountain grandeur. That stillness became my subject. In this portrait I have tried to capture that same serenity—a luminous calm where tone does the work of drawing and soft light holds the whole in tranquil balance. The low horizon, the silvery atmospheric recession, the muted harmony of color: these are not decorative choices but the means by which I hope to convey the profound peacefulness I found in our American landscape, a beauty that asks for contemplation rather than astonishment.
