The statement

I have spent these last years learning to see American light as it truly is—not through the lens of Düsseldorf formulas I carried home, but with eyes unclouded by European habit. Returning from a decade abroad, I found myself "almost bewildered before American scenery" and knew I had to "put aside my acquired Düsseldorf habits and learn to see and paint the native landscape honestly on its own terms." Yet now I turn from landscape to portraiture, bringing that same luminous stillness to the human face.

The discipline I absorbed while posing as a model for Leutze's *Washington Crossing the Delaware* taught me how light shapes form, how a face emerges not through hard outline but through soft atmospheric gradation. I paint this portrait as I paint a clearing or a prairie—with subdued tone, silvered light, and calm precision. No theatrical shadow, no restless brushwork. The sitter should seem as tranquil and unhurried as still water, bathed in the same gentle, even luminosity that fills my Newport skies. What I want the viewer to feel is serenity: the deep quiet of a mind at peace, rendered with clarity and untroubled beauty.
