Imagined after Worthington Whittredge
An oak try by a hay field

The statement
After more than a decade abroad, I returned to America determined to forget my European training and paint our native landscape honestly, on its own quiet terms. The great prairie taught me that our truest beauty lies not in dramatic peaks or wild torrents, but in the level stillness and immense, tranquil light of open country. This oak beside the hay field offered exactly that lesson—a single vertical presence anchoring the eye against the vast horizontal sweep of cut meadow and luminous sky.
I have tried to hold the whole canvas in an even, atmospheric calm. The Düsseldorf discipline I absorbed while modeling for Leutze's grand compositions now serves a simpler purpose: to draw with tone rather than outline, to blend transitions softly, and to let light do the work of structure. Warm ochres in the stubble grade into cool silvered blues above; the oak's foliage catches the same gentle radiance that fills the open air. No wind disturbs the scene, no drama interrupts its serenity.
I want the viewer to feel what I felt crossing the Plains in 1866—that profound, untroubled peacefulness that comes when the land itself seems to breathe quietly under an immense, luminous sky.
