A western landscape, after Worthington Whittredge

The statement

I have returned from Europe determined to see America for what it is, not through borrowed eyes. Crossing the Great Plains in 1866, I was struck not by the grandeur of the Rockies but by something quieter and more profound—the vast, level solitude and immense quiet light of the prairie itself. That stillness moved me more deeply than any mountain drama, and I have set out to capture it here.

The Düsseldorf training I absorbed—posing for Leutze's *Washington Crossing the Delaware*, learning disciplined drawing and careful finish—must now serve a different purpose. I felt almost bewildered before this native landscape at first, recognizing that I had to put aside my acquired habits and learn to paint honestly on its own terms. Here I have kept the horizon low, letting luminous sky and soft atmospheric light do the work of composition. Cool silvered blues and muted greens hold the scene in tranquil suspension; no sharp outline interrupts the even, radiant calm.

I want the viewer to feel what I felt on those empty plains: profound serenity, unhurried and untroubled—the deep quiet that comes only from inner peace meeting outer stillness.
