A portrait of a woman, after Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun

The statement

I have just completed a new portrait of a woman, and as always, I preferred to paint her in a plain gown, without the elaborate trappings that so often smother the natural grace of the sitter. "It may be well imagined that I preferred to paint her in a plain gown and especially without a wide hoopskirt," as I learned early in my practice—even with the Queen herself, I found that simplicity revealed rather than obscured the person within.

In this work, I have sought the same luminous warmth that drew me to Rubens, allowing natural daylight to caress the flesh and catch the soft fabric of her dress. The composition remains open, the pose relaxed and flowing, so that the viewer encounters not a stiff effigy but a living presence—someone who might turn, smile, meet your gaze with genuine vivacity.

My brush has pursued what it always pursues: grace without artifice, charm without affectation, the elegance that comes from removing everything unnecessary. The woman before you is neither a symbol nor a monument. She is warm, alive, immediate—a human soul rendered with the tender attention I have given to every sitter who has honored me with their trust.
