A gathering, after Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun

The statement

In painting this gathering, I have sought to capture that vivacity and warmth which have always been my truest guides. I prefer naturalness to ceremony — as I once wrote of the Queen herself, "It may be well imagined that I preferred to paint her in a plain gown and especially without a wide hoopskirt" — and so here too I have chosen to show my subjects as they truly are: animated in conversation, turning toward one another with genuine feeling, their poses flowing rather than stiff.

The light falls gently across faces and fabric, warming the flesh as I learned from Rubens, while my palette remains luminous and high-keyed. I have arranged the figures to form an intimate circle, a composition that draws the viewer into their company rather than holding them at formal distance. What I wish you to feel is the charm of human connection, the grace of effortless companionship — that attractive liveliness which makes a portrait live and breathe. In these uncertain times, I paint what endures: the tender bonds between friends, the elegance of simple courtesy, the vivacity of spirits meeting in trust and affection.
