The statement

When the Holy Office questioned me about the dogs and dwarfs I placed in my Last Supper, I answered that painters claim the same licence poets and madmen take, adding such figures as ornaments to fill out the scene where composition leaves room, following my own judgement of what a great house and feast would contain. This principle guides me still: I paint what magnificence demands.

Here, a single figure holds forth a watermelon — that abundant, festive fruit — in an interior whose patterned walls and arched doorway speak of patrician splendor. The architecture runs parallel to the picture plane, as in my great refectories, organizing space into legible, luminous harmony. I have kept the colour high and clear, the light even and radiant, so that silk and stone and flesh all glow without harsh shadow. The ornamental wall behind does not compete but enriches, as I believe ornament should.

I mean the viewer to feel what early admirers called my art's gift: that I give rein to joy, making beauty festive and majestic. The watermelon's crimson abundance against shimmering surroundings — this is my subject as much as any saint.
