A bicycle courier resting by a canal at dusk, after Johannes Vermeer

The statement

I have positioned a figure at rest beside still water as dusk settles—a moment I have long sought to capture, when the last daylight holds objects in suspension before night arrives. My contemporaries note that perspective is "the most extraordinary and curious quality" of my work, and here I employ the same measured space: a low horizon gives the sky its due weight, as in my View of Delft, where "a low horizon gives most of the canvas to sky."

The bicycle I have rendered with the same patience I gave the chandelier and map in The Art of Painting, each spoke and gear receiving its place. The courier's form builds as a stable pyramid against the canal wall, much as I composed The Milkmaid, "a solid pyramid against a plain sunlit wall." Cool shadow claims the near bank while the fading sun strikes the water beyond; I paint the reflections with dotted touches to catch the wet, dimming light.

Philip Steadman argues I project my motifs with a camera obscura to achieve an unmatched rendering of daylight, and this dusk—neither day nor night—demanded such precision. The deep blue of the courier's jacket sounds against the warm ochre of the towpath. I ask the viewer to enter this stilled, unhurried interval: profound calm before the evening lamps are lit.
