The statement
I have worked always from what stands before my eye. My teacher Pacheco wrote that I resolved early to keep a live model constantly before me and to prize humble fidelity to nature above the flattering formulas of other painters—that habit has never left me. When I painted the waterseller's cracked jars or the wary face of His Holiness in Rome, I sought only to render what light actually does as it falls across clay, silk, flesh, the beaded moisture on a vessel's surface. This new work continues that discipline: no invention where observation will serve, no idealization where truth suffices.
I paint with economy now, building form from swift, summary strokes that resolve at distance into breathing air. The palette remains restrained—earth tones, a few clear notes of color—so that nothing distracts from the matter at hand: the palpable presence of a figure in measured space, the quiet dignity of a sitter met with impartial attention. Whether the subject is a pope or a man who carries water, my aim is the same—to make visible the act of seeing itself, without comment or condescension, and to grant every human countenance the grave respect it is owed.
