The statement

I have painted a kitchen in the heart of Sicily — a nonna's kingdom — where the table grows longer for every soul who arrives. The sight of that endless table made me dream in as simple a way as the stars do: here is shelter, here is bread, here is the passion of welcoming. I have tried to express not the kitchen as it appears under ordinary light, but the *feeling* of it — the warmth that opens and never closes.

I painted the walls in broad planes of yellow and orange, outlined sharply in the Japanese manner I so admire, so that color alone would carry the mood without shadow to muddy it. The table stretches forward in steep perspective, almost tilting toward you, and I built its surface thick with impasto — the grain of old wood, the wear of ten thousand meals — so the light seems to rise from the paint itself. Red and green jostle in the hanging peppers and bottles: the terrible, beautiful human passions of hunger and generosity.

This is a painting of necessity. A table that never runs out of room is a table painted with sincerity.
