A woman he was in love with in a garden, after Vincent van Gogh

The statement

I have tried to paint her as she lives in my memory — not as she appears in ordinary daylight, but as she stirs my feeling. The garden around her is not the garden of botany but of longing: I have pushed the greens toward blue and raised the yellows until they sing, because "I've tried to express the terrible human passions with the red and the green." The impasto is thick where her figure stands, built up in ridges so that the afternoon light catches on the paint itself and makes her presence felt as a physical fact on the canvas. I have outlined her simply, in the manner of the Japanese printmakers whose flat, joyful color I have tried to make my own here in the south — no cast shadows, only the singing planes of color that hold her shape against the foliage.

She was always just out of reach, and so the garden bends and tilts around her, pulling forward as in my Bedroom, giving that same dizzy intensity to what should be calm. The path is red, the flower-beds are sulphur and orange, the sky through the leaves pulses with that blue I used in the Starry Night when I wanted to make the heavens move. This is not description — it is necessity. I painted her this way because I could not do otherwise.
