Imagined after Vincent van Gogh
A man smiling
After Vincent van Gogh, made 2026-09-02. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have painted a man smiling because I wanted to capture something simple and true—the warmth of a human face turned toward light. The sight of a smile moves me in the same way the stars do: it makes me dream. I have tried to express this feeling through color itself, not by copying what I see but by heightening it until it speaks directly to the heart.
I laid the paint thickly, building the contours of the face and the curve of the mouth in relief so that the surface lives and breathes. The background I kept flat and bright, in the manner of the Japanese printmakers I so admire—those artists who work with clarity and joyful color, unafraid of simplification. I chose yellow for the light on his face, perhaps too much yellow, and set it against blue or green to make it pulse with warmth. As I have written before, "I've tried to express the terrible human passions with the red and the green"—but here, in this moment of gladness, I let the yellows and blues carry the gentler passion of companionship and hope.
This is a painting of sincerity. I want you to feel that you know this man.
