Red panda in a birds-nest chilling, after Vincent van Gogh

The statement

I have painted a red panda resting in a bird's nest because the sight moved me to dream, just as "the sight of the stars always makes me dream in as simple a way as the black spots on the map, representing towns and villages, make me dream." Here is a creature at ease in a refuge not its own—improbable, tender, utterly itself. I wanted to convey that feeling of shelter and strangeness together.

I have treated the red fur and the woven twigs with the same thick, directional strokes I used for the wheat and the cypresses, building the surface so it lives and breathes. The nest is a tangle of warm ochres and siennas outlined firmly in the Japanese manner—flat planes held together by drawing, as in my Bedroom, where color alone built the mood. Behind, the sky pulses in broad bands of cobalt and violet, restless but harmonious, so the little figure seems both cradled and adrift.

I have tried to use color arbitrarily, heightening it to express not the panda as it appears in nature, but the quiet passion of the moment—the peace of a small life suspended, chilling, dreaming. This is what I needed to paint.
