An untitled study, after Jan van Eyck

The statement

I have placed my hand to a new panel, and as ever I inscribe what I must: "Johannes de eyck me fecit"—Jan van Eyck made me. This is not vanity but witness. When I wrote above the Arnolfini mirror "Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434," I declared myself present as surely as any notary; when I crowned the Man in a Red Turban with "Als Ich Can"—as I can, as only Eyck can—I set a challenge no rival has yet met.

This new work holds to that standard. Every surface receives the same patient layering of oil glazes that gave the Ghent Altarpiece its near-hallucinatory solidity, that made the brass chandelier and fur trim of the Arnolfini chamber appear lit from within. I build luminosity through transparency: light passes into the paint and returns transformed, lending each object—cloth, metal, flesh—its own quality of radiance. Nothing is softened or generalized. The stubble, the reddened eye, the exact weight of a turban's fold: these demand microscopic, unhurried description.

What should the viewer feel? The tangible presence of things as they are, caught in crystalline clarity, made permanent.
