A woman holding a dog, after Jan van Eyck

The statement

I have set down before you a woman holding a small dog, and I have done so "as I can" — *Als Ich Can* — which is to say with all the care that oil and patience permit. The dog's wiry coat, the woman's folded sleeve, the play of daylight across her face: each surface asks to be described truly, without haste, until the eye might mistake paint for the thing itself. This is no different from my purpose when I painted the little terrier in the Arnolfini chamber, or modeled the red turban's folds so that shadow and glaze made cloth nearly tangible. Light moves through these layers as it moves through the visible world, and if I have succeeded, you will feel the weight of the animal in her arms, the warmth of living skin, the exact quality of the air between you and them. I inscribe my name as witness: I was here, I made this, on such-and-such a day, and what you see is what I saw — rendered with the microscopic finish that every surface, however humble, deserves. Let it stand as proof that clarity, and the truth of things as they are, require no ornament beyond faithful looking.
