The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have labored to make this work as only I can — "Als Ich Can" — a challenge I inscribe because I know what these layered oils permit. Every surface must carry its own truth: the way light enters a ruby, the exact weight of velvet against skin, the particular shine of polished brass in afternoon sun. I build these passages glaze upon glaze until the matter itself seems to glow from within, until you might reach forward and touch what I have conjured.
When I signed the Arnolfini Portrait "Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434" — *Jan van Eyck was here* — I declared my presence as witness. So too with this work: I was here, I saw this light, and I have set it down with unflinching attention to what *is*. On the Man in a Red Turban I wrote "JOHES DE EYCK ME FECIT" — *Jan van Eyck made me* — because the making itself, this microscopic patience, this refusal to soften or simplify, is the point.
You stand before a thing rendered with total legibility, every thread and reflection and shadow described so you cannot mistake its substance. That is my ambition: clarity that approaches the tangible.
