Imagined after Jan van Eyck
A woman holding a dog
After Jan van Eyck, made 2026-07-07. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set down what was before me: a woman, her dog cradled against her chest, both caught in the steady daylight that enters from the left. The dog's coat — wiry, uneven — demanded the same unhurried attention I gave to the brass chandelier and the little terrier in the portrait I signed "Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434." Each hair receives its portion of light; the woman's sleeve, folded velvet perhaps, must glow through glaze until you believe you could lift it between finger and thumb.
I work as I can — "Als Ich Can" — to make the viewer a witness. The mirror in that earlier chamber folded the unseen world into the room; here, the dog's gaze and the woman's gesture do the same, binding her presence to yours. I inscribe my making in the surface itself, as I did when I declared "JOHES DE EYCK ME FECIT" on the twenty-first of October, 1433. This is not invention but testimony: I was here, I saw this light fall across fur and fabric, and I have made it visible again, as only Eyck can.
