Imagined after Jan van Eyck
A gathering
After Jan van Eyck, made 2026-10-04. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set before you a gathering of figures, each countenance and fold of cloth described with the same patient labor that compelled me to inscribe "Johannes de eyck fuit hic 1434" upon the Arnolfini chamber — to say, I was witness here. As I declared when I completed the portrait of the man in the red turban, "JOHES DE EYCK ME FECIT," so too do I make this assembly, that you might know these people were observed, their presences accounted for with the devotion owed to what is actually seen.
The light falls upon them as it does in the world — glancing off the brass of a clasp, sinking into woolen folds, catching the sheen of an eye — and I have pursued each reflection through layers of glaze until the surface itself seems to emit what it receives. Every texture invites the hand: the wiry dog, the fur trim, the stubbled jaw. I crown this work as I crowned my motto in Greek letters, "Als Ich Can" — as I, Eyck, can — a challenge to render the tangible world with such clarity that the viewer stands not before paint, but within the gathering itself, implicated as witness.
