The statement

I have just completed a canvas that I exhibited beside these verses from my unfinished poem *The Fallacies of Hope*: "Where now does hope lie?" The subject is the collision of human aspiration with indifferent nature—a ship caught in the turning vortex of storm and light, its fate already written in the dissolving atmosphere around it.

I have painted the whole as a spiralling mass, sea and sky scraped and swirled until they become one element, as I did with the steam-boat labouring in the harbour's mouth. The horizon has been all but erased; only the dim form of the vessel holds any solidity against the rotation of wind, spray, and blazing sunset. The furnace-red light that floods the scene carries both sublimity and menace—beauty so overwhelming it transcends comprehension, yet stained with the transience of all temporal things.

The viewer should feel the vitality of the elements as living force, and understand that beneath this dissolving spectacle lies a deeper truth of nature than any stable, hard-edged representation could reveal. Hope, here, is swallowed by the sublime.
