Imagined after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
"Artiquity"
After Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, made 2026-08-21. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have placed *Artiquity* before you as I have placed the maison close and the dance hall before the public: as a workplace, not as spectacle or sermon. Julia Frey observes that I chose "the dance hall and the maison close as modern workplaces to be drawn without sermon — nightlife and waiting as facts of Montmartre, not as anecdote or warning." This new picture extends that principle to the space where painting itself is produced and seen.
The composition employs the shallow geometry I used in *At the Moulin Rouge*, where "space is a shallow café geometry, not a stage." Here, figures occupy the gallery and studio as they occupy the banquette in *In the Salon of the Rue des Moulins* — "a red-pink ring that holds the figures like a waiting room." My line remains "wiry even in oil, so every head is a likeness and a type at once." I want the viewer to see art-making as labor and looking as fact, stripped of the picturesque haze that obscures honest observation. The poster taught me that "flat silhouettes and a few letters designed to be read from the street" can still name a specific person and place. *Artiquity* names this place.
