An untitled study, after Titian

The statement

I have laid in this picture as I have always done: boldly, with a mass of colour, building the forms in broad strokes. Then I turned it to the wall and left it untouched for many months, so that when I returned I might see it as if it were the work of a rival, with fresh eyes and no mercy. In these last weeks I have rebuilt the flesh through many glazes, one upon another, until the colour glows as if lit from within—warm, living, breathing. In the final touches I have worked the paint as much with my fingers as with the brush, coaxing the surface to shimmer and dissolve, so that form emerges not from line but from the play of light across broken colour.

I have always sought to make my figures live: to capture not the frozen outline of the body but the surge of blood beneath the skin, the warmth of flesh that breathes and moves. Whether saint or goddess, prince or courtesan, each must meet your gaze with undeniable presence. Here, too, I have laboured to bring that vitality forth—to make you feel the weight, the warmth, the very pulse of life held in suspended movement upon the canvas.
