The prince, after Titian

The statement

I have laid in this picture of the prince as I do all my works — boldly, with a mass of colour that I will turn to the wall for months, then return to as if facing a rival's canvas. Only through many glazes, building layer upon layer, can I bring the flesh to living presence, and in the final touches I work the paint as much with my fingers as with the brush, as my pupil Palma observed.

The prince stands before us in the fullness of youth and authority, his figure filling the frame so that we meet him eye to eye. I have rendered his silks, velvets, and flesh each with their own touch — the fabric caught in bold, open brushwork that flashes with light rather than describing every thread, while his face and hands receive more finish to hold his gaze and gesture. The warm golden light that bathes him is the heart of my art: that glowing Venetian colour which seems to burn from within the very paint, as in the red of the Virgin's robe that pulls the eye heavenward, or the radiant flesh of Venus against white sheets.

The viewer should feel the prince's vitality, his presence as a living being who breathes and commands — not a frozen effigy, but a man of power caught in the unimpeded flow of life itself.
