The stark contrasts between life in Egypt today and when he was alive. But also it's similarities, after Thutmose

The statement

I have finished the bust of the queen, and now I turn to a harder task: to hold two Egypts in a single image—mine and one I cannot see but must trust exists, separated by more than three thousand floods of the river.

In my time, we carved the eternal into stone so that the living image might never fade. I am told that in the Egypt of today, images are captured in an instant, yet dissolve just as quickly. Still, the Nile rises and falls. Still, the same sun that bleached my limestone splits the same sky. Still, a face must be understood as both particular and ideal, a single soul and the form that names it.

I work again in limestone and stucco, modeling flesh that reads as flesh, seeking "a face at once ideal and specific." The composition must hold both stillness and the evidence of change—the old verticals of crown and temple beside the restless geometry of a new city. Serenity must survive its surroundings.

What should remain is this: that clarity of presence, the understanding that a people persist even as their tools and tyrannies transform around them.
