A woman, after Thutmose

The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have just completed a new portrait study — another woman's face emerging from limestone and stucco. In my workshop we pursue what the king's new vision permits: a likeness that is both ideal and unmistakably *her*. This is the sculptor's problem under Akhenaten's reign — how far can individual character be pushed within royal form?

The technique remains what has proven true: carved limestone beneath, then modeled stucco for the flesh, brow, and lip, painted while fresh. "The bust is carved limestone finished with modeled stucco and painted" — this layering lets me search for the exact curve of cheek and jaw that will read as this particular woman in every subsequent image the workshop produces. I test the modeling, sometimes leaving one eye blank, because these studies are master-models for standardizing a likeness, not finished presentation pieces.

What I want the viewer to feel is presence — that a specific person stands before you, serene and whole, the forms read cleanly without clutter. The long neck, the level gaze, the untroubled calm: this is grace made permanent in stone.
