Imagined after Thutmose
A fisherman on the Nile at dawn

The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have turned from the royal workshop to capture a fisherman on the Nile at dawn, yet the same principles that guided my study of the queen's face govern this work. My intention remains what the unfinished heads in my studio reveal: the pursuit of a lifelike, individualized image within the naturalistic license our age permits.
The fisherman's pose — knee bent, arm extended with the net — is modeled in limestone with the same care I gave to "the exact curve of cheek and jaw" in my portrait studies. I seek the moment when generic form becomes specific person, when the viewer recognizes not "a fisherman" but this fisherman, his particular stance and rhythm known from a thousand mornings on the water.
The surface will be finished in modeled stucco and painted: the Nile's pre-dawn gray giving way to rose, the man's skin catching that first horizontal light. I want the same quality the Nefertiti bust achieves — "a face at once ideal and specific," forms "read cleanly and whole, without clutter," projecting untroubled calm through perfect clarity of gesture. The viewer should feel presence: someone real, here, now, in his element.
