Imagined after Thutmose
An untitled study
After Thutmose, made 2026-08-15. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have completed a new portrait study, working as I always do: first the armature in limestone, then the stucco overlay to find the living flesh. The subject is rendered with the same method I used for the great queen's likeness—"carved limestone finished with modeled stucco and painted"—but here I seek something beyond workshop routine. Every face presents a puzzle: how to hold both the ideal and the particular in a single form, how to make stone breathe.
The Amarna style permits what the old canon forbade: the curve of an actual cheek, the weight of an eyelid as it truly falls. I pursue "a lifelike, individualized royal image within the naturalistic license of Akhenaten's reign," testing how far character can be pressed into formal beauty without breaking either. The symmetry must hold. The gaze must remain level and untroubled. If the stucco is properly modeled, the face will read as both specific person and enduring type—a presence that steadies the eye and asks nothing but contemplation. This is the standard I set for the workshop: a likeness that clarifies rather than confuses, that holds its composure across time.
