Imagined after Thutmose
An untitled study
After Thutmose, made 2026-08-09. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new work that returns to the problem at the heart of my practice: how to fix in stone a living face that can be recognized across a thousand images, yet still read as one particular person standing before you.
This piece is carved limestone finished with modeled stucco and painted, the same technique that allowed me to capture the Queen's likeness in what scholars now call a "workshop master-model for the queen's likeness rather than a completed presentation piece." Here, too, I seek that balance between the ideal and the specific—what I have learned through years of testing "how far individual character can be pushed within royal form."
The naturalism our king permits has freed me from the old canon's rigidity, letting me model flesh, brow, and lip as they truly appear, while maintaining the clarity and composed stillness that royal images require. My unfinished study heads expose the search itself: the exact curve of cheek and jaw that makes a face unmistakably itself.
I want the viewer to feel what I felt carving the Queen's likeness—that uncanny moment when stone becomes presence, when "a face at once ideal and specific" looks back.
