A man with a watermelon, after Thutmose

The statement

I have completed a new work: a man with a watermelon.

My studio pursues a lifelike, individualized image within the naturalistic license our time permits. As with the portrait studies of the royal family—where I tested "how far individual character can be pushed within royal form"—this figure required the same search for specificity. The watermelon, rendered in painted stucco over limestone, carries the weight of daily life into the realm of portraiture.

"The bust is carved limestone finished with modeled stucco and painted," the method that allowed me to model flesh, brow, and lip with the naturalism the old canon forbade. Here, the fruit's rind and the man's hands receive the same attention: each curve studied until it reads as this melon, this grip, this moment.

The composition holds to perfect bilateral calm, the figure's gaze level and untroubled. You should feel presence—a specific person before you, carrying something ordinary with quiet dignity. The work is a master-model for how the everyday, when observed with complete technical command, achieves its own unexpected grace.
