An untitled study, after Thutmose

The statement

I have just finished a new bust — limestone beneath, then stucco shaped and painted over it, with one eye inlaid in quartz while the other remains deliberately unset. This is not negligence. It is method. In my workshop we must produce the queen's likeness again and again, for temples, for stelae, for the king's chambers, and each time the face must be *hers* — the exact curve of cheek and jaw that reads as Nefertiti, no other woman. So I carve a master, perfect in its modeling, and leave one eye blank so that my assistants may study the technique of inlay against the standard of the face itself. They learn to see structure and surface together.

The new reign permits what the old forbade: I may follow the real bones beneath the skin, the particular fullness of this mouth, the precise angle where brow meets temple. Yet it must still be *royal* — poised, eternal, untroubled. The tall crown steadies everything, a single vertical axis. The face is perfectly bilateral except for that missing iris, and the tension between ideal and specific makes it uncanny: you feel she is present, here, now, looking back. That is the problem I am solving — how far individual character can live within the form that kingship demands.
