The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have made this head as I made the queen's: by seeking the precise curve of bone and flesh that marks one face among all others. In our workshop we work from life, building the likeness in modeled stucco over carved limestone until we hold the person themselves in stone. This new head follows that same discipline—I search for the exact shape of brow and jaw, the particular fullness of lip, the specific angle at which light strikes cheek.

The missing eye in the queen's bust marks it as a master-model, a pattern for apprentices to study and copy. Whether this head will serve the same purpose or stand complete I cannot yet say. What matters is that the modeling is true. Since the king opened the door to naturalism, we are freed from the old rigid canon. We may now capture individual character within royal form. I test how far that individuality can be pushed—the unique geometry of this particular skull, this singular gaze—while still achieving the clarity and serenity proper to an image that must endure. The viewer should see a person, present and specific, suspended in the calm that belongs to immortality.
