The statement

I have just completed a new study of the queen's head, and once again I find myself pursuing that balance between the ideal form demanded by her station and the particular face I see before me. The bust is carved limestone finished with modeled stucco and painted; one eye is inlaid with quartz while the other was left blank, which marks this piece as a workshop master-model for the queen's likeness rather than a completed presentation piece. This is not decoration—it is a problem I solve in three dimensions: how far can I push individual character within royal form? The exaggerated physiognomy our king has introduced permits a new naturalism, a modeling of flesh, brow, and lip that the old canon forbade. Perfect bilateral symmetry is broken only by that single missing iris, and the effect is uncanny: a face at once ideal and specific. The long neck and poised head, the crown rising as a single calm vertical—these stabilize the whole and project the untroubled calm befitting a queen. When you stand before this work, you should feel you are in the presence of a specific person, here and now, gazing back at you with clarity and profound inner stillness.
