# Artist's Statement
I have sought once more to present the American West as a scene of luminous grandeur, working from studies made directly before this ranch landscape. As Driesbach documents, my practice has always been "painting rapid oil sketches directly from nature in Yosemite and the Sierra, studies of specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes." Here, the open ranch ground and distant ridges give me that quality of radiant atmospheric depth I have pursued across decades—the warm light pooling on the meadow, cool haze pushing the far hills back into space.
I frame the composition as I did in *A View up Yosemite Valley* and *Yosemite Valley*: a detailed foreground opens onto a sunlit middle distance, the enclosing landforms guiding the eye through layered glazes toward the luminous horizon. The ranch buildings anchor the human presence within the vastness, much as the ceremonial crowd in *The Last Spike* was staged within the open West. I want the viewer to feel the settled serenity of still air and steady light, the magnificence of scale that makes even a working landscape a scene of splendor.
