I have long sought to present the American West as a theater of sublime grandeur, and this view along the Smith River in Montana continues that effort. Just as I painted rapid oil sketches directly from nature in Yosemite and the Sierra—studies of specific light and place that underlie my finished studio landscapes—I have worked here to capture the particular luminosity of this northern river country. The composition opens through a detailed foreground of rock and pine onto the sunlit water and the distant mountains beyond, framing the scene like a portal into depth. Warm afternoon light pools on the riverbanks while cool atmospheric glazes push the far peaks back, dissolving them softly into the sky.
My intent remains what it has always been: to show these wild places as icons of American magnificence, landscapes of such sweeping scale and radiant light that they command reverence. The tranquil stillness of the river, the towering presence of the mountains—these are the qualities that give the West its sovereign dignity. I want the viewer to stand before this canvas and feel the profound serenity of still water and hushed light, to see Montana as I have seen the Sierra: a realm of overwhelming natural majesty.
