# Artist's Statement
I have come to this ranch scene as I come to all my subjects — pencil and oil in hand, seeking the light that declares a place. The photograph before me shows open pasture rolling toward distant hills, a composition of meadow and sky that recalls the luminous expanses I have painted in Yosemite and at Lake Tahoe. Though the scale is gentler than the granite cliffs, the essential challenge remains the same: to capture how atmosphere and radiance transform landscape into vision.
I work from rapid oil sketches made directly from nature, studies of specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes, as I have done throughout the Sierra. Here, warm afternoon light pools across the grassland while cool atmospheric glazes push the far ridges back into depth. I frame the view with detailed foreground elements — fence posts, perhaps, or scattered trees — opening the eye onto the sunlit middle distance, much as I compose valley floors between flanking walls.
The viewer should feel what I felt before Emerald Bay's glassy stillness or Yosemite's hazy meadows: serenity within grandeur, the profound calm of settled light across an open land.
