The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have just completed a new canvas drawn from direct observation of the ranch lands, working as I have always done—beginning with rapid oil studies made on the spot, capturing the particular light and character of the place, then building the finished composition in the studio. As Driesbach documents, my practice has been "painting rapid oil sketches directly from nature in Yosemite and the Sierra, studies of specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes."

This ranch scene opens through a detailed foreground onto the sunlit expanse beyond, the familiar structure I have refined across my Yosemite views: warm afternoon light pools on the meadow while cool atmospheric glazes push the distant hills back into luminous depth. The still air and hushed golden light give even this pastoral scene the settled calm and radiant grandeur I seek in all my Western subjects. I mean to present this working landscape as I have always framed the Sierra—as an icon of American abundance, where the vast scale commands reverence and the glowing atmosphere carries the eye across an expanse that feels both serene and magnificent.
