The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have long sought to present the American West as a scene of sublime grandeur, and this new canvas continues that calling. Working from a ranch photograph, I returned to my practice of building a monumental studio composition from direct observation—what Driesbach describes as my method of "painting rapid oil sketches directly from nature in Yosemite and the Sierra, studies of specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes."

The ranch itself, with its open pastures and distant peaks, offers that same luminous atmospheric depth I have pursued across the Sierra. I have framed the view through a detailed foreground—perhaps a weathered fence post or clustering pines—that opens onto the sunlit meadow beyond, where warm afternoon light pools across the grass and cool atmospheric glazes push the far mountains back into haze. The composition follows the structure I have refined over decades: a portal through shadow into radiance, the eye carried across tranquil ground toward the towering, softly dissolved forms beyond.

I want the viewer to feel the serenity of still light and hushed space, yet also the magnificence of scale—the ranch as another threshold onto the vast, luminous West.
