The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have long sought to present the American West as a scene of sublime grandeur, and this new work continues that endeavor. The ranch before me—captured in a moment of ordinary light—called for the same treatment I have given Yosemite's granite cliffs: to reveal the magnificence already present in the land. As Driesbach documents, my practice has always been "painting rapid oil sketches directly from nature," studies of specific light and place that become the foundation for finished studio landscapes.
Here, I open the composition through a detailed foreground of fence and scrub onto the sunlit pasture beyond, the distant hills framing the view like a portal. Warm afternoon light pools across the meadow while cool atmospheric glazes push the far ridges back into luminous depth—the radiant glow that carries the emotion of every view. The still air and hushed light give even this working ranch a settled serenity, the quality that steadies any grand scene.
I want the viewer to feel what I felt standing there: that this ordinary Western ranch partakes of the same majesty as Emerald Bay's glassy waters or Yosemite Valley's towering walls—a sovereign grandeur worthy of reverence.
