The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned once more to the Sierra, to set down what I witnessed in the high country under an afternoon's changing light. The cliffs rose before me with that overwhelming scale one cannot convey in words alone—only paint can hold the luminous haze that softens the granite walls and draws them back into immeasurable depth. I worked my oil sketches directly from nature, as is my practice, capturing the specific quality of light as it pooled on the meadow and river below, the warm glow against cool atmospheric distance.

This scene opens through a detailed foreground of rock and pine onto the sunlit valley beyond, the flanking cliffs framing the view like a portal into the sublime American wilderness. My intent remains what it has always been: to present Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada as icons of grandeur, to show the eastern public the magnificent scale of the West now opened to them by the railroad. The radiant Sierra light, the still air, the sense of serene vastness—these are the qualities I seek to preserve on canvas, that the viewer might stand before this work and feel the weight and wonder of the land itself.
